Have A Clogged Sink Drain? Fix It Yourself!

Unclog a clogged sink drain:
When talking about unclogging a
clogged sink drain
you must consider that there are two different types of sink drains. One is the kitchen sink drain and the other one is the bathroom sink drain also known as washbowl drain.
Each line must have its own approach in order to get it unclogged. But in this section I will be referring to the kitchen sink drain.
As I already mentioned before, a kitchen line measures on average from 15 to 35 feet in length , however, once in a while there will be a kitchen line that will measure up to 75 feet long.
So, how to unclog a clogged sink drain that has such a long length? It will depend on how the line was done, the age of the plumbing and the cause of the blockage.
You will have two options to unclog a clogged sink drain:
The first option is to cable the line with a snake that is long enough to reach the blockage.
The second option is to power wash the line with a scourt-jet machine, which should be done only by a professional.
The cable will unclog the line, while the scourt-jet will really clean it by washing away all the sludge found in the line.
Using the right equipment for the job:
Since kitchen line is a secondary line, you should use a small size machine to get the job done.
Depending on the machine brand, you will find different specification for it; however, if you buy or rent a Spartan machine, the right machine is the 100-machine.
Below you will find a picture of a 100-machine, so that you know what type of machine you will need to use to unclog a clogged sink drain.
If you buy or rent the machine, you should have step-by-step instructions on how to use it. If you rent, make sure to have it demonstrated to you.
The access points for a kitchen drain:
If residential plumbing is done according to the code, you will be able to find at least three different access points.
The most common access point is under the sink. If you choose this option, you will have to remove the p-trap under the sink to have access to the pipe directly.
Sometimes, you will find a clean out available in the pipe under the sink, if this is the case, your job might be a little bit easier.
Another access point commonly found in kitchen line is a clean out installed half way in the line, normally between the kitchen sink and floor in the basement.
If you don’t have a clean out installed in the line and cannot go under the sink, the available option is going through the roof vent. This last option should only be done by a professional.
Warning: When cleaning any drain in you home, make sure you protect yourself. Use latex gloves, leather gloves, goggles and earplug.
