Unclog Your Clogged Toilet Yourself!

How to unclog a clogged toilet?

One of the most common household problems we all face from time to time is the clogged toilet . Fortunately, most clogs can be fixed by using the correct tool, such as a plunger.

How easy is to unplug a toilet?

Clog toilet is one of the easiest drainage stoppages to be unplugged, do you know why? It is because the plug is right in the toilet trap but what seems to be easy does not always turns out in the way.

What will determine the level of difficulty when unplugging a clogged toilet? The answer is simple; it will depend on the cause of the blockage.

For example, if the cause of the plug is human waste or excess of toilet paper, you might still be able to unplug it using a regular plunger.

Now, if the plug was caused by a foreign object such as a toy, cell phone or anything of the nature, you will not unplug the toilet just using a plunger. Another tool will be necessary.

Ways to unplug a clogged toilet:

Start by using a ball plunger or a flange plunger.

If this does not bring results, then try using a toilet auger, also known as water closet auger.

This particular tool will allow you to bring back most foreign objects, such as a toy. If this does not work, then you have to pull and reset the toilet to auger it from the bottom up.

Pulling and resetting a toilet:

1 – Make sure to turn the water off in the angle-stop valve behind the toilet. If the valve is in bad shape and if you think that it will leak, you might have to shut the water off for the whole house in the main valve.

2 – Drain the water from the tank and from the toilet bowl.

3 – Unscrew the supply line from the base of the toilet tank.

4 – Remove the caps from the screws in the base of the toilet and, unscrew the washes and nuts from the base of the toilet.

5 – Make sure that you have rags and plastic covers to cover the floor before turning the toilet on its side.

6 – Check the bottom of the trap to see if the blockage is there.

7 – Use the toilet auger to push the blockage back in the toilet bowl.

Resetting a toilet:

1 – Make sure you have a new wax seal to replace the old one.

2 – Replace screws, washes and bolts.

3 – Make sure that the screws are secure and tight in the toilet flange.

4 – Install the new wax seal (wax ring) on the flange (in the floor).

5 – Put the toilet back in place and seat on the bowl to help level the toilet in the floor.

6 – Screw nuts and bolts until the toilet is firmly attached in the floor.

(P.s.: Do not over tight the nuts and bolts, it might crack the toilet base. Be careful).

7 – Re-connect the water supply line in the toilet tank base.

8 – Turn the water back on and check for leaks. If everything is ok, make sure the toilet is flush well.

9 – Use caulking around the toilet base, this look nicer and it will prevent possible sewer gas leakage into your bathroom.

That’s it! Job well done!
