Leaky Disc Faucet, Repair Or Replace It?
Repairing a disc faucet leakage should not be complicated. If you follow the basic direction found in this page, you can easily repair or replace it.
Before you start make sure that you have the right set of tools. To work on this type of faucets, you will need to have pliers to pull the disc assembly out of the faucet.
Disc Faucet (s)
are available in one or two handles and, if you have the two handles type, this particular type of faucet controls the flow of water by openings in the two discs.
The reason of why this type of faucets leak is because the discs get old, rusty, bad water quality and deregulated water pressure, these are the typical reason why the discs wear off.
The worn discs cause the faucet to leak and simply turning the handles harder will not stop the leak, in fact, it can cause matters worse.
How to Repair Leaky Disc Faucet?
To repair a leak in a two-handle faucet, please, the guidelines located below:
1) Turn off the water supply & drain the water from the faucet.
2) With a screwdriver unscrew the screw set from under the lever. The screw holds the lever to the lever post.
3) Lift off the cap that covers the cartridge, loosen the screws on top of the cartridge and remove it from the faucet.
4) Once the cartridge is exposed, remove it, this will allow you to see the set of seals located on the bottom of it.
5) Pull out the worn seals and replace them with new ones from the kit that you bought from the store. Make sure to clean all parts before reassembling them together.
6) When reinserting the cartridge, align the holes with those in the base of the faucet body. Reassemble the faucet reversing the order it was taken apart.
7) Now that all the pieces are put together is time to turn the water back on and test for leaks. If everything was done correctly, you shouldn’t have any leaks, however, if the problem persists, you might consider re-doing the whole procedure.
However, if you have to stop the disc faucet leak more than three times and, you did not correct the problem, at this point, you have two options:
a) You might consider contracting a professional to repair the faucet leakage.
b) You might decide to replace the whole faucet, this second one might a better option and, you will save money by doing it yourself, otherwise, it might cost you anywhere between $500 to $750 to have a professional to do it.
When in doubt, make sure to always consult a professional before attempting to do any plumbing project by yourself.
