Trenchless Pipe Burst Technology

What is the difference between pipe burst and traditional trenching methods?

Pipe bursting is a trenchless technology that was developed to repair buried damaged pipes.

The goal of this technology is to diminish the tremendous amount of digging that is usually present on a traditional repair of underground piping system.

The system works with water, natural gas and sewer pipes.

The Equipments:

Typically the complete equipment system is composed of five key pieces that are involved during the whole operation.

The pieces are: the expander head, pulling rods, a pulling machine, a retaining device, and a hydraulic power rack.

How Does The System Work?

To replace an old pipe installation, the bursting system will need to have two points of access, which is point A and point B, in other words, two holes.

The pipe bursting method needs two holes in order to work. The first hole is typically excavated by the house while the second hole is typically excavated on the street or in the end of the line.

The system has an expanding device, also known as expander head which is used to burst through the old piping system. A bursting system can be operated by either pneumatic or hydraulic.

The system works by being introduced into the defective pipeline through a launching pit.

The expender head travels through the old piping, as the head is pushed through it; it breaks the old pipe into small pieces while simultaneously pushing the new pipe in place of the old one.

The new pipe takes the same space and grading of the old piping while, correcting minor grading problems existent in the old pipe.

Upsizing Pipes:

One of the greatest benefits of the trenchless technology is that, the system can upsize an old pipe into much bigger sizes, for example, a 3” sewer line can be upsized to a 4” sewer line. It is known that the pipe bursting technology can upsize pipes up to 600mm diameter or even more.

Sewer Replacement:

How much does it cost to replace an existing sewer line using the burst technology? The cost to replace a sewer pipe using this system will vary greatly, in part; it will depend on the length of the existing pipe, the deepness of it and what’s involved in it.

Replacing a sewer line is still very expensive, even though, most of the dig is spared by the bursting method, the fact is, it still going to cost thousands of dollars to replace a pipeline because the trenchless technology is a very expensive invention and cost a lot of money to maintain it.

However, when comparing a traditional method with a newer technology, such as the bursting one, the later technology will likely be 30% cheaper than a traditional digging method.

Benefits Of Pipe Bursting:

What are the benefits?

The bursting technology will save the homeowner around 80% to 90% of the front yard, thus, saving thousands of dollars to the homeowner for not having to re-do the landscaping.

The new system is a lot safer than the traditional way because of the less amount of digging involved during the pipe installation process.

In terms of material used to do the job, the trenchless technology uses a lot less materials, which translate into more savings to the client, in fact, it saves thousands of dollars.

Pipe burst is a lot quicker, while a traditional method can take days to accomplish the task, the trenchless methods, in most cases, can be done in half day.
