Show Drain Replacement

Can you replace the shower drain on an 80 year old shower or is this just for newer ones?

I have a shower that is leaking onto the dining room ceiling (plaster). I know it is the drain because we stopped using the shower and the leak stopped. I poured water directly into the drain and the leak started again. I would like not to have to rip down ceilings and walls. Is this possible?
