Toilet Flapper Replacement

What is a toilet flapper and why is it so important to know about it?

Do you have a running toilet and don’t know what the problem is or how to fix it? Look no further!

Running water in toilets is caused by defective or old flapper.

Running water is a very common problem in toilets; in fact, over 70% of toilets, new and old had or will have in some point a running water problem from the tank to the toilet bowl.

The good news is that, despite being such a common problem, it is also one of the easiest toilet plumbing problems to fix.

Anyone can fix running water problem in toilets and, below, can found seven steps of how to fix such problem.

To repair the problem, it will be needed: a pair of scissors or a box cutter, paper towels or rags and of course, a new flapper.

Make sure to buy the right kind of toilet flapper, for that, the old one needs to be removed and be taken to the store for comparison when buying the replacement flapper.

The First Step:

1 – Close the water supply at the angle stop valve on the wall, under the tank, behind the toilet.

2 – If the

shut off valve is in bad shape, old or stuck, turn the water off at the main water valve located inside the house on in the front yard at the meter.

3 – Flush the water from the tank completely.

The Old Toilet Flapper:

1 – Remove the flapper chain from the tank handle.

2 – Remove the old flapper valve from the overflow tube (center piece installed in the center of the tank) by sliding it out from the overflow tube.

3 – Clean around the center hole really well.

Installing The New Flapper:

If the new toilet flapper is a typical kind of flapper, it is likely that, it has a round ring shape in the back of the flapper, if that is the case, do the following first:

1 – Remove the circular ring tube, this is done by cutting between the two flapper ears the back and, you do it with a pair of scissors, a sharp knife or a box cutter.

2 – Install the new flapper in the place of the old one and connect the chain with the toilet handle.

3 – Turn the water back on and check if the new flapper is working properly, you do that by flushing the toilet several times and by checking inside the bowl to see if the water still runs or not.

The whole job should not take more than 15 minutes, also, be prepared to invest around $10 to buy the new flapper.

P.s.: Adjust the flapper accordingly, do not let it too long or to short.
