What is the better option? The better option would be to install a saltless water softener or, better yet, a whole house water filtration system would fix the problem.
Most water filtration system does not require any chemical to treat the water, so, if the water is drained on the grass, the water won't cause any harm to it.

Water Softener Indoor & Outdoor by: Joe
Hello Alexis, how are you?
I am glad that you asked this question and I hope that you haven't installed anything yet.
Let's go directly to your question: You asked if Is it possible to install a water softener that can be used for both inside and outside water?
With the advancement of technology, today you can find two main types of water softeners: water softener that use salt and saltless water softener.
If you buy a water softener that uses salt, the answer for your question is "NO" you can't use it for outside purpose. Why? For example, if you water your lawn with salted water, the grass will die, if you wash your car with salted water, overtime your car will likely rust and corrode.
Therefore, the best option in this case would be to buy and install a saltless water softer, this one won't use salt to soften the water, therefore, it should be safer than the first one.
However, I have a question, why do you want to install a water softener in your home or business? Did you know that today you can find better options to solve your water problems?
